Coroner rules WSU QB death was suicide

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) The Whitman County coroner has concluded Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Coroner Peter Martin says Thursday in a press release that the manner of death was suicide.

The 21-year-old Hilinski was discovered in his apartment after he didn't show up for practice Tuesday. A rifle "was recovered next to Hilinski and a suicide note was found," according to the Pullman Police Department.

FAU QB Driskel says he's ending career

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) Jason Driskel is ready for the real world.

The Florida Atlantic quarterback announced Thursday that he's ending his football career, even though he would have been eligible to return to the Owls next season. Driskel is about to graduate with a civil engineering degree.

Oklahoma's Mayfield wins Manning Award

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield says one of his top priorities as he prepares for the NFL draft is to allay concerns about his character.

"People will have their guesses and their opinions on my character, but anyone that's actually sat down and talked to me knows that I don't have any character issues, any off-the-field issues," Mayfield said Thursday night during a conference call after being selected the 2017 Manning Award winner.

Auburn hires Buffalo's Greene as AD

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Auburn has hired Buffalo athletic director Allen Greene to run its athletic department.

Auburn announced the hiring of Greene Thursday to replace longtime AD Jay Jacobs, who is retiring. Greene was promoted to Buffalo's athletic director in November 2015 and previously worked at Mississippi and Notre Dame. He will take over the department in February.

Banks to coach Alabama special teams

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Alabama has hired Jeff Banks as its special teams coordinator.

Banks, whose hiring was announced Thursday, spent the past five seasons as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. The Aggies ranked third nationally in net punting and second in punt return average last season.

Oregon AD Mullens to be CFP chairman

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens will become the new chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee starting next season, and three new Power Five ADs will join the 13-member panel.

Mullens will be the third chairman, replacing Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt, who has led the committee the last two seasons.

Texas QB Buechele to have hip surgery

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Texas quarterback Shane Buechele will undergo surgery for a torn muscle in his hip and abdomen area but should return in time for spring practice in March.

Buechele was the full-time starter as a freshman in 2016 then split starts with freshman Shane Ehlinger in 2017. Buechele started the Longhorns' win over Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

Orange Bowl counted as Miami home game

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) After further review, Miami's home winning streak is over.

The NCAA says that Miami's loss to Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl counts as a home loss for the Hurricanes. The game was played at Hard Rock Stadium, which has been Miami's home field for a decade.

Agent's contact with UNC player probed

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Investigators are looking into whether an NFL agent violated North Carolina's sports agents law by contacting a Tar Heels football player despite not being registered with the state.

According to a search warrant, the Secretary of State's office sought Facebook records for Tennessee-based agent Brandon Smart. The document states Smart contacted UNC senior offensive lineman R.J. Prince to schedule a time to discuss "the NFL draft process" through an online message last year.

Auburn rehires Grimes to coach O-line

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) JB Grimes is returning for his second stint as Auburn's offensive line coach.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced Wednesday that Grimes will replace Herb Hand, who left to become co-offensive coordinator and line coach at Texas.
