|May 21 9:18 AM PT10:18 AM MT11:18 AM CT12:18 PM ET12:18 ET16:18 GMT0:18 9:18 AM MST11:18 AM EST11:48 AM VEN20:18 UAE11:18 AM CT-Carlos Martinez allowed two hits and one walk without giving up a run in 9.0 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Saturday. Martinez struck out five, ending the game with a 3.28 ERA and 1.14 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Martinez pitched nine innings for the first time in his career, but fell victim to lack of run support. Martinez needed just 93 pitches to get through nine innings. ''This was probably his best start of his career and part of that was his trust in his defense and making pitches in the bottom,'' Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.

Martinez struck out seven, ending the game with a 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Martinez's solid outing was overshadowed by his performance at the plate, as he drove in four runs on a pair of hits to aid his own cause. He's had an up-and-down beginning to the season, but has won his last two starts and recorded seven or more strikeouts in five of his seven stints.

Analysis: The Cardinals' expected ace has posted a lousy 7.04 ERA in losing his last three starts and has issued 11 walks in 15 1/3 innings over that stretch. Martinez is still helping owners in the strikeout category, though. He's now racked up 31 in 22 2/3 innings after fanning seven on Thursday.

|Apr. 9 5:15 PM PT6:15 PM MT7:15 PM CT8:15 PM ET20:15 ET0:15 GMT8:15 5:15 PM MST7:15 PM EST7:45 PM VEN4:15 UAE (+1)7:15 PM CT-Martinez gave up six runs - five earned - and six hits in five-plus innings in Sunday's 8-0 loss to the Reds.
Analysis: Coming off a brilliant Opening Night turn in which he fanned 10 Chicago Cubs in 7 1/3 scoreless innings, Martinez didn't exhibit the same stuff or command in this one. He hit two batters, walked one and threw a wild pitch. He'll make his next start Saturday at Yankee Stadium, and was brilliant against the AL last year, going 1-0 with a 0.67 ERA and 0.93 WHIP.

According to ESPN.com, the deal would be the longest ever given a player heading into his first year of arbitration eligibility.
Analysis: Per ESPN, the biggest deal for a pitcher entering his first chance at arbitration was Corey Kluber's five-year, $38.5 million contract with the Cleveland Indians in 2015. Martinez was an All-Star in 2015, when he finished 14-7 with a 3.01 ERA in 31 games (29 starts). Last year, he went 16-9 with a 3.04 ERA in 31 starts.
