Scouting Report

OVERVIEW

A two-star athlete recruit out of high school, Henderson initially committed to Utah where his brother was a wide receiver, but switched to Louisiana Tech shortly before signing day, redshirting in 2013. He started seven games as a freshman in 2014 and posted 29 receptions for 569 yards and four touchdowns. Henderson struggled through injuries as a sophomore (10 starts) and recorded 36 catches for 774 and five scores, ranking sixth-best in the FBS with 21.5 yards per reception and earning All-CUSA Honorable Mention honors as a kick returner. He had his best season as a junior with 19 receiving touchdowns (tied with Corey Davis for FBS-best), 1,535 receiving yards (fifth-best in the FBS) and 82 catches, earning First Team All-CUSA honors as a receiver and kick returner -- was named the Conference-USA Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Year. Henderson elected to skip his senior season and enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

A three-year starter at Louisiana Tech, Henderson lined up mostly outside for the Bulldogs and emerged as one of college football's most dangerous weapons as a junior, leading the FBS in all-purpose yardage (2,473) and receiving touchdowns (19). He lacks ideal height and length for the position, but uses physicality to separate and runs powerful with the ball in his hands, flashing a nonstop competitive nature. More fast/quick than explosive, Henderson is at his best with a runway to catch and motor away from pursuit -- projects best as a No. 2 receiver on a NFL roster, adding value as a kick returner.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS: Muscular frame and lives in the weight room to develop his body. Quick, powerful strides and picks up speed as he goes to pull away. Productive YAC talent (19.6 yards per catch career average). Savvy in space with the balance to stop on a dime, allowing defenders to overpursue…peripheral vision to find developing run lanes. Stout ballcarrier and defenders need to wear their big boy pants to get him on the ground…tramples defensive backs and runs through arm tackles. Physical in his routes to fight off coverage and gain late separation. Tracks well as a downfield target -- led the FBS with eight 50-plus-yard receptions in 2016. Watches the ball into grasp. Averaged 26.5 yards per kickoff return with three career touchdowns (79/2,094/3). Also scored three rushing touchdowns, averaging 8.0 yards per carry. Highly productive receiver with a breakout 2016 campaign, becoming the third receiver in school history with 1,500+ receiving yards in a single season -- finished his La Tech career third-best in touchdown grabs (28) and sixth-best in receiving yards (2,878).

WEAKNESSES: Shorter than ideal. Moves with some tightness in his midsection…not an explosive leaper and struggles to highpoint when crowded. Not a concise route runner and needs to better control his speeds in his patterns to mislead defenders. Matches the physicality of corners downfield, but needs to better avoid contact to maintain timing in his routes. Mostly free releases and will need to develop his technique vs. press. A lot of basket and trap catches on film…production inflated by pass-happy scheme…missed playing time over his career due to several minor injuries, including right hand surgery (Aug. 2015), hamstring issue (Oct. 2015), internal injury (Oct. 2015), four dislocated toes (Dec. 2015) and a nagging ankle (Sept. 2016).
